Breastfeeding Support

WIC peer counselors are moms. They help educate mothers about breastfeeding. They can also answer any breastfeeding questions and are available to help over the phone or in person.

The peer counselors are women who have breastfed their children and who have received training in breastfeeding techniques, special circumstances, and counseling. They share and exchange ideas. They offer:

  • Breastfeeding support
  • One-on-one counseling
  • Phone contacts
  • Manual or electric pumps
  • Other breastfeeding resources, such as lanolin, shells, shields, and books

The breastfeeding peer counselors are available to do home or hospital visits.

A monthly breastfeeding support group (abbreviated on the calendar as BF Support Group) is held the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 10:00 a.m. at the Granite City site and the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 10:00 a.m. at the Wood River site.

The breastfeeding peer counselors offer weekly pregnant/breastfeeding parent groups.

Breastfeeding mothers receive more WIC benefits. If a mother is exclusively breastfeeding (only breast milk, no formula), they receive additional foods on the WIC coupons, such as tuna fish and carrots. The baby will receive more infant foods at 6 months.

Why breastfeed?

  • Breast milk has more of the good things babies need
  • Stronger immune systems
  • Breast milk is strong in antibodies and nutrients to protect a baby
  • Breast milk is easier to digest
  • Breastfeeding will save money, and also incresae the amount of WIC food individuals are eligible to receive

The National WIC Association published this image to help make mothers more aware of the support that is available for breastfeeding mothers, and the benefits of breastfeeding.
